Directions

The BJC 2013 venue (the Ryedale Exhibition & Leisure Village) is located on the A169 Malton Road, just over 1 mile south of the centre of Pickering. The entrance is 500 yards north of the Black Bull Pub and 700 yards south of the Steam and Moorland Garden Centre.

The postcode is YO18 8EA, though using this postcode in your satellite navigation device might only get you to the Black Bull Pub, the coordinates of the venue entrance are: 54.227711, -0.771278.

If you are travelling by car and have a spare seat you might want to consider offering a lift to somebody else travelling to BJC.

You can use the government public transport journey planner, but you may find the following information useful.

Rail

The nearest real train station is Malton, there are trains every hour from 06:40 to 22:10 from York to Malton, the journey takes 23 minutes and an adult ticket costs £8.60 (after 09:30).

From Malton train station there is a bus stop opposite the station (Stand 1) for the 840 bus which will take you to the venue, or you can get a taxi for about £17. The bus from Malton takes about 20 minutes, costs £3.70 (single), and the last bus leaves Malton at 19:05.

York is the nearest mainline station with frequent trains to most parts of the UK, for example London is only about 2 hours away by train.

You can find train times and fares on the National Rail website.

For long distance trains you can save money by booking your ticket in advance if you know what time train you will be travelling on.

There is a railway station in Pickering 1.5 miles from the venue, but it is only for steam trains from Grosmont or Whitby and there are only 3 trains from Whitby a day. You can find the timetable here.

Bus

The BJC venue entrance is 500 yards north of the bus stop at the Black Bull Pub / Upper Carr Lane (NaPTAN code: 32010027). Please note this bus stop is before you get to Pickering (it is between Flamingo Land and Pickering). It is also 100 yards before the pub.

The 840 Coastliner bus (from Leeds/York/Malton) stops there roughly once an hour, 10 times a day on weekdays and the last bus leaves Leeds at 17:00, York at 18:14–18:22, and Malton at 19:05.

It might be faster to get the train to York or Malton and catch the 840 there, but the bus would probably be cheaper.

Adult Bus Fares:

  • Leeds to Pickering (~2h10m); £11 single, £20.60 return
  • York to Pickering (~1h10m); £8 single, £15 return
  • Malton to Pickering (~20m); £3.70 single, £6.90 return

It is possible to get to Pickering from York via Seamer using the 843 Coastliner to Seamer and then the 128 to Pickering, but then you will need to walk (or get a taxi) the mile from Pickering to the venue. This might be an option if you are too late for the last 840 from York by 30 minutes, but this circuitous route does take an hour longer.

If you have a car it is only 1hour 15min drive from Hull to Pickering.

More details of the ferries can be found at www.poferries.com. It is cheaper (per person) if there are 4 of you travelling together as you have to book a cabin.

There are also ferries to the south coast of England which may be faster and cheaper, but the south coast is over 250 miles away from Pickering.

Car Sharing

Hitchhiking is not very common these days and the risks should not be ignored. There might be opportunities to lift-share or car pool to get to York (if not to Pickering) there are several car sharing websites offering to help find you a lift or you could ask on the BJC Facebook group to see if there are any jugglers going to BJC with a spare seat who might be able to help.

Cycling

Pickering is in a beautiful part of the country for cycling, you can get directions from the CycleStreets website.
