And now for a bit of old-fashioned English fun! From 2pm–4pm on Thursday 11th April, BJC 2013 brings you a traditional-style Yorkshire Fayre and other Yorkshire-themed activites.
Expect the sort of stall you remember seeing at school fayres in your childhood. What could be more traditionally Yorkshire than trying your hand at hook-a-duck or a bit of welly wanging?!
How it’s going to work
Stalls will be set up on site, run by volunteers. Buy yourself 10 tokens for just £1, then take your pick of the stalls! Each turn on a stall costs one token, equivalent to 10p and there will be good old penny sweets as prizes. If you’d like to volunteer to run a stall, please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org. There are some ideas for stalls to start you off here.
Workshops will be run on Thursday morning to enable you to get your stalls sorted out. If you’ve e-mailed us beforehand, that would be great, as this will give us the chance to collect together as many materials as we can to help everyone make their stalls fantastic. If you decide to run a stall which needs something really specific, see if you can think of a way to bring this along yourself. If you just want to turn up to the workshops to help out and join in, that’s fine too. Pens and paper will be available for you to make signs for your stall.
Fancy Dress Competition
At 3:45 there will be a fancy dress competition, open to everyone of any age. The theme is ‘Children’s Characters’, so whether it’s Peppa Pig, Fireman Sam, Little Miss Muffet or one of the Railway Children, get your thinking caps on to create a prize-winning costume! The competition will be judged by the Mayor of Pickering.
Morris Dancing Display
At 4pm, local morris dancing side The Minster Strays will be enhancing the traditional feel with a demonstration of border and Cotswold morris dances. See if you can spot a couple of this year’s BJC Crew among their number!
At 7pm our bar marquee will become a ceilidh tent for one night only! Juliette Pegram of The Minster Strays will be your caller and the band will be ‘The Rough and Ready Boys’. So get your dancing shoes on! The band will also play another set later in the evening.
